Samsung releases the Galaxy S5 and Gear 2 Smartwatch

Ian Kersey from Intomobile 24/2/14 brings us the news of the Galaxy S5 release.

As expected, Samsung unveiled its 2014 flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S5 at Mobile World Conference (MWC) 2014 in Barcelona on the 24/2/14. The Galaxy S5 is an impressive device, taking the design of the Galaxy S4 to a whole new level. The GS5 is water and dust resistant, rocks a 5.1 inch 1920 x 1080 display and includes a fingerprint reader on the home button, as well as a heart rate monitor on the backside.

The Galaxy S5 carries on Samsung’s penchant for plastic housings for its smartphones. The back panel has circular dimples, giving the device a bit of a rugged feel.

Here are the specs of the Samsung Galaxy S5:

  • 2.5GHz Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor

Samsung Galaxy S5 Evolution

“People want a high-quality yet easy-to-use camera built into their smartphones so that they can snap, edit and share like a pro. With the Galaxy S5 we were able to incorporate all of these needs without sacrificing the device’s design, style and general functionality,” says Ki Hyoung Son from Samsung Electronics’ camera R&D group.

Samsung is marketing the device as being designed to be used with the company’s Galaxy Gear range of smartwatches, with key features such as its S Health 3 software taking real-time readings from the watch.

Samsung hasn’t announced when it will begin shipping the Galaxy S5, but it will more than likely hit store shelves soon.

Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo Smartwatches

Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 smartwatch

The Gear 2 (right) and Gear 2 Neo expand Samsung’s wearable line to a pair of smartwatches. The main difference between the two new models is that the Neo lacks a camera. Also, the camera on the Gear 2 is now built into the main watch body rather than the strap as per the previous  model. That’s a big plus for owners who may want to swap the provided strap with one of their own.

Each of the two new smartwatches includes a heart-rate sensor as well exercise modes, making them bona fide fitness wearables — not just tiny windows to your smartphone. The watches now have their own music players, too, able to output audio wirelessly to Bluetooth headsets.

Extra bonus: The watches also have an infrared emitter so you can use them as a basic remote control for your TV, just like Samsung’s recent tablets and phones.

This generation of Samsung smartwatches is powered by Tizen, which Samsung is now saying is its official operating system of wearables (the previous Gear was Android-based). As more and more devices become “smart” — from smartwatches to thermostats to TVs — a new platform war is emerging, and Samsung appears to have nominated Tizen as its champion in that arena.

It’s unclear what the switch to Tizen will mean for the compatibility of Gear apps, but at least you can use these models with more devices: Samsung says the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo will be compatible with dozens of the company’s phones.

Like the original Galaxy Gear, the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo each sport a 320 x 320 1.63-inch touchscreen. The new models pack a dual-core 1GHz processor (the original was single-core 800MHz chip) as well as 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage (same as the original).

Without the 2-megapixel camera, the Gear 2 Neo is slightly lighter than the Gear 2, 1.9 ounces vs. 2.4 ounces. Both watches are available in Charcoal Black and Wild Orange, while the Gear 2 also comes in Gold Brown and the Gear 2 Neo can come in classy Mocha Gray.
